The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has commented on the recent arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Sharing his thoughts on the incident during an interview with Onua TV on June 11, 2025, he stated that Chairman Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to respond to charges brought against him.

Asiedu Nketiah criticised the reaction from NPP members, led by Afenyo-Markin, who gathered at EOCO’s premises in protest.

He questioned the reasoning behind their demonstration, arguing that Wontumi had merely been invited to answer questions as part of due process.

“I heard that he was invited by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to respond to allegations of illegal mining and was later arrested again over money he had received for a contract but failed to fulfill. Afterwards, EOCO stated that within 48 hours, he would either be granted bail or taken to court. If he opted for bail, it would come with specific conditions,” he said.

He argued that Chairman Wontumi had been granted bail which had to be satisfied before he could be released and hence wondered why the NPP insisted on protesting at the EOCO headquarters.

“Following this period, EOCO issued the bail conditions, which had to be satisfied before he could be released. So, what justified the protest and demonstration by NPP MPs, led by Afenyo-Markin, at EOCO’s premises? Even going as far as sitting on the floor in protest. I never understood the uproar,” he added.

Asiedu Nketiah further advised the opposition NPP, to approach issues with rationality and avoid being impulsive on such matters.

“When leading a political party, one’s speech should be rational and constructive something that inspires others to support and engage meaningfully. Instead of always acting out impulsively, leaders should set a tone of reasoned discourse,” said.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako was invited and subsequently held by EOCO for interrogation on alleged corruption.

He was later released after fulfilling a bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties.
