Former Ghana international Michael Essien has shared his admiration for the Right to Dream project, a youth development initiative that played a significant role in his decision to join Danish club FC Nordsjaelland as an assistant coach.

In an interview with the BBC, Essien revealed that his long-standing relationship with the club’s founder, Tom Vernon, was instrumental in his decision.

Vernon is also the founder of the Right to Dream Academy, a renowned youth development outfit.

“I’ve known the founder, Tom Vernon, for a very long time, since I was 17 or 18. I always kept in contact with him, and he followed my football career,” Essien explained.

When Vernon invited Essien to visit the club and learn about its development-focused project, he was impressed by the initiative’s potential. “He told me about the whole project. I came, and it was a nice environment. So I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to work here.'”

Essien praised the Right to Dream project for its commitment to developing young players and providing them with opportunities to experience professional football.

“I love how they develop their boys here, giving very young boys the opportunity to experience professional football.”

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder also highlighted the calm and supportive atmosphere at the club as a major draw. “It’s calmer; the environment is very nice and very healthy. Everyone is ready to help whenever you need.”

Essien’s work at Nordsjaelland reflects his passion for youth development and fostering a positive footballing culture, contributing to the club’s reputation as a nurturing ground for emerging talent.
