Former Lower West Akim MP, Gifty Klenam, has joined the NDC after being sacked from the NPP

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, Gifty Klenam, has revealed that she actively supported the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the last election because she believed her constituency needed better leadership.

Klenam admitted that while she was on the ballot as an independent candidate, she did not print posters or campaign with T-shirts. In an interview on Joy Prime monitored by MyNewsGh, she explained, “At a certain point, I saw that the sitting MP’s performance was low, and the people were calling for change. We saw that the NDC candidate was a better option, so we helped the NDC candidate to win. For me, it’s about the constituency.”

Klenam emphasized that her decision was not based on personal grievances but on her commitment to development.

She recalled her tenure as an opposition MP, claiming her contributions to the constituency were unmatched. “If your government is in power and you can’t deliver, the people will vote you out. That’s exactly what happened,” she added.

When asked if she had contributed financially to the NDC’s campaign, she denied it, asserting that her mere presence on the ballot was enough to sway voters. “The fact that Gifty Klenam’s name appeared in the constituency alone was a vote against the NPP,” she said. “Just my face on the ballot was big news.”

Despite her defection, she maintained her respect for the NPP, stating, “The party has done a lot for me, but what matters is selecting candidates who can truly serve the people.”
