Renowned American actress, Taraji P Henson, has shared what inspired her to take up the role for the popular “Straw” movie.
In a discussion on “The View” show, Taraji noted she took up the role of Janiyah Wiltkinson because she has been in a similar situation before.
Taraji explained that even though she faced a similar situation, she however got support from her family.
“I love roles that I get to give voice to the voiceless because people who feel unseen get to know that they are not alone. And also stories that would force the audience to lead with more grace and understanding. Because you can not judge a book by its cover.
“I have been in that situation before but the difference between me is that I had an incredible support group. Family and a great circle of sisters that released some of my pressure. But Janiyah did not and there are so many Janiyah in the world and I want them to feel seen. I was immediately drawn to the scripts,” she said.
Taraji also recounted how Tyler Perry positively influenced her career in the movie industry.
She also recounted an incident where Tyler Perry played a pivotal role in her career by motivating her to take a character in the popular Acrimony movie.
“Tyler continues to challenge me. I was filming Fight Night and he called me to that he’s got something for me. I told him I wanted to finish and he was like, he wanted me on while filming Fight Night.
“There were moments during Acrimony I told him I can’t do it and he was like I know you can. You are an instrument if anybody can’t do it, I can. So he challenged me and I rose to the occasion and now I am kind of a pro actor,” she added.
