Ghanaian social media influencer and content creator Gisela Amponsah has opened up about a difficult period in her life.

She disclosed that she struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts two years ago due to personal challenges and the pressure of social media.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on January 25, 2026, Gisela mentioned that the combination of issues she was dealing with at the time, coupled with constant online trolling, took a serious toll on her mental health.

“I’ve had a depressive phase before. Two years ago, I was highly suicidal. It had to do with the things I was dealing with, but adding social media to it was just too much for me,” she said.

According to her, negative commentary from bloggers and social media users often worsened her emotional state, especially on days when she was already struggling.

“I went through a lot, sometimes you would be having a bad day and a blogger would be busily trolling on Twitter. I’m a human being; things go wrong and we all face challenges,” she shared.

Gisela stated that she sought professional help to heal from the trauma, noting that therapy played a crucial role in her recovery.

“I went into therapy to recover from the trauma. I’ve done therapy three times in my life so far,” she said.

While acknowledging the benefits of therapy, she also explained why many people may find it difficult to seek help.

She added that she often prefers to work on herself rather than burden others with her struggles.

“I wanted to get better, but I understand why people wouldn’t want to go into therapy because it requires a lot of vulnerability. I wouldn’t want to impose my problems on other people, so I would rather feel better to be able to keep my people around,” she noted.

As a public figure and creator, Gisela said her emotional state directly affects her work and audience, making it even more important for her to prioritise her mental well-being.

“It also shows in what you do. As a creator, if I’m sad, they would notice and if I’m happy, they would notice. I wouldn’t want to risk my career for that,” she added.
