Former English international, Jamie Carragher has ruled out Chelsea’s from the Premier League title race ahead of the 2025/26 season.

According to Carragher, Chelsea’s best place in the upcoming season will be to occupy the fourth position because they cannot finish ahead of either Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City.

Speaking on The Overlap podcast, the former Liverpool defender downplayed Chelsea’s ability to mount a title challenge.

“I still don’t see Chelsea finishing above the other sort of top three, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City and going for the Premier League title,” he said.

Carragher’s assessment comes despite a strong campaign under manager Enzo Maresca I*during the 2024/25 season, which yielded a top four finish, the UEFA Conference League trophy, and the Club World Cup triumph.

He remains particularly critical of Chelsea’s transfer dealings, highlighting that new additions haven’t significantly improved the squad.

He pointed to wide recruitment among wingers, like Jamie Gittens replacing Noni Madueke, as evidence of lateral moves, not genuine upgrades.

Defensive vulnerabilities are another flashpoint. Carragher reiterated that Chelsea’s goalkeeper and centre-back pairings, specifically Robert Sánchez and Levi Colwill, fall short of elite standards required for championship contention.

Even though he acknowledged the depth and optimism surrounding Chelsea’s current project, he argued the club needs foundational reinforcements in goal and defence before realistically contesting for top honours.
