Veteran gospel musician Anim Yirenkyi has stated that he no longer subscribes to the concept of religious music.

In an interview on 3FM on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, he said, “The message of music should serve generations. I believe in good music and bad music. I don’t believe in religious music anymore.”

He further elaborated, “What Africans need now is a God who will open our eyes and show us how to use what we already have to achieve liberation. If you don’t know what you have, you will leave billions to beg for thousands.”

According to him, music is spiritual, but some have misleadingly categorised it.

He believes that music should remind people of their identity, origins, and future.

Anim Yirenkyi also emphasised that it is the responsibility of governments to encourage the creation of music that reminds people of their roles in society.

“I believe in ‘nation-making’ music. Governments need to motivate people to create music that reminds them of their role in nation-building because no one else will do it for us. We are born into a world with everything we need; we just need to know how to use it. If your teacher is preparing you to conquer, then the classroom should be your battlefield,” he explained.
