Popular Ghanaian rapper Medikal has addressed his recent post regarding his 2021 arrest.

Following the December 7, 2024 elections, in which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost, Medikal took to his X account to accuse the NPP of embarrassing and unlawfully jailing him.

In an interview on Hitz FM on December 16, 2024, Medikal discussed his tweet and the circumstances surrounding his 2021 arrest.

He clarified that the gun he was in possession of was licensed and registered by the police.

“I didn’t accuse anyone, I never stole from anyone, and I wasn’t brandishing anything in public. I was at home, within my own walls. It’s not like I was chasing someone with it,” Medikal explained.

He went on to emphasise that brandishing a weapon doesn’t apply to someone taking a picture of a licensed firearm inside their own home.

“Brandishing isn’t when you are in your house and you take pictures of something that has been licensed and registered by the police themselves,” he said.

Medikal described his arrest and subsequent imprisonment as both inhumane and unjust.

“I was put in jail. It was inhumane. It wasn’t right,” he stated.

Background

Medikal was arrested in October 2021 after posting a video on Snapchat showing himself holding a Ruger 9mm handgun while seated in his car.

The video quickly went viral, and the police arrested him on October 21, 2021.

He was charged and arraigned the following day, and subsequently remanded in custody for five days.

Medikal admitted to the offense in his caution statement.
