Popular Ghanaian comedian turned musician, David Oscar Dogbe, has opened up about a difficult period in his life, revealing how betrayal within the Ghanaian comedy scene pushed him into depression.

Speaking in a recent interview on Talkertainment with GhanaWeb’s Elsie Lamar, David Oscar recounted how internal tensions within the comedy movement deeply affected him emotionally.

According to him, at a time when he was considered the de facto leader of the Ghana comedy movement, some individuals within his own circle were unhappy with his leadership role.

“I woke up one day and I realised that the people who had surrounded me at the time, because I was like a de facto leader of the GH comedy movement, there were some people who were not happy with the fact that I was seen as the leader of the pack,” he said.

David Oscar noted that the opposition did not come from outsiders but from people he considered part of the team, adding that some deliberately worked to undermine his progress.

“These people were not even outsiders; they were people who were part of the pack, supposedly. Certain people actively worked to sabotage my efforts and steps,” he disclosed.

He described the realisation as heart-breaking, stating that it led him into a deep state of depression.

“When I woke up to that reality, it was heart-breaking. I fell into a deep state of depression,” he shared.

The musician further stated that reggae music became his source of healing during that dark period, admitting that it helped save his life.

“That’s when I discovered reggae music as a healing tool. Because if not for reggae, I probably would have committed some suicide,” he said.

David Oscar explained that his journey into reggae went beyond music, as he fully embraced the culture during what he described as a transformative phase of his life.

“Then I started getting into the culture. I had to be a convent and that was the crazy period,” he added.
