Ghanaian rapper, Guru, has disclosed that he maintained a very strict and distant relationship with his lecturers throughout his time in school.

He explained that he did so to avoid discomfort and unnecessary attention.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on November 27, 2025, the musician disclosed that although he was a public figure on campus, he intentionally kept a low profile and avoided forming close ties with lecturers.

According to Guru, his decision was influenced by the fear of being embarrassed or misinterpreted because of his celebrity status.

“I wasn’t free with any lecturer till I completed. The reason is, you will be embarrassed. You trying to engage a lecturer because of who you are, I wasn’t comfortable with it,” he said.

He shared that he was not close to most of the Teaching Assistants either, preferring to rely on his colleagues for academic support.

“I wasn’t even that close with most of the TAs. I was just laying low and I engage in colleagues who are well inclined with whatever topic it is when I’m finding challenges in some topics,” he noted.

The rapper emphasized that it took significant effort to juggle his career and academics.

He admitted that he could have opted to pursue a mature student programme, but chose instead to follow the traditional system.

“I’ve invested a lot. Being a regular student or right from the very top of your career and just being a regular student, I could have preferred being a mature student but decided to follow the system to achieve the degree in a very respectful way. It was very stressful but I would say it was a privilege,” he said.

Guru further stated that his academic journey exposed him to the campus political environment and enabled him to explore leadership roles.

“It was a core mandate but we’ve been able to accomplish that. Doing that also gave me the chance to explore and understand what goes into the political space. I’ve learnt a lot, I’m working in progress and I’ve really accomplished a lot when it comes to the student body because the highest position one can attain is being the SRC President,” he added.
