Hundreds of athletes and fitness enthusiasts gathered at the University of Ghana last weekend to participate in the Independence Day Marathon, held as part of activities marking Ghana Independence Day.
The race, staged on the university’s Legon campus, attracted runners from various clubs, institutions and the general public who competed across different race categories in a celebration of endurance, unity and national pride.
Participants navigated the scenic but challenging routes around the campus, cheered on by spectators and event officials who gathered to witness the competition. Organizers said the marathon was aimed at promoting fitness and encouraging greater participation in athletics while commemorating Ghana’s independence.
The event also provided a platform for emerging long-distance runners to test their abilities and gain competitive experience.
Officials noted that the Independence Day Marathon forms part of efforts to use sport as a tool for community engagement and youth development. They added that the strong turnout reflects growing interest in recreational running in Ghana.
Organizers expressed satisfaction with the successful staging of the race and indicated plans to make the marathon an annual fixture.
