New York City’s new Mayor, Zohran Kwame Mamdani, is making headlines not only for his historic victory but also for his lifelong love for Arsenal Football Club.

The 34-year-old politician, born in Kampala, Uganda, to Ugandan-Indian scholar Mahmood Mamdani and Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, became the first New York mayor of African descent after defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the elections.

That passion, however, didn’t happen overnight. In an interview shared by CBS Sports Golazo, the newly elected mayor revealed how his love for the North London club began in the early 2000s, thanks to his uncle.

“I’m a big Arsenal fan. I came up as a fan in the early 2000s and it was my uncle who introduced me to the team,” Mamdani said.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani said his East African roots made Arsenal’s connection to the continent especially meaningful.

“I was born in Kampala, Uganda, in East Africa, and my dad’s family is from East Africa. Arsenal was one of the first teams to have a number of African players, Kolo Touré, Nwankwo Kanu, Emmanuel Eboué and Alex Song,” he added.
