Former Chelsea captain, John Terry has spoken candidly about the darkest moment of his career, a moment that followed the most painful miss of his life in the 2008 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United.

As Chelsea captain, Terry stepped forward in Moscow with the chance to win the club’s first Champions League trophy in 2018. The rain-soaked pitch betrayed him and he slipped.

The penalty struck the post. In seconds, glory turned to devastation, and Manchester United eventually lifted the trophy.

What followed, Terry admits, was far more dangerous than the miss itself.

Back at the team hotel, alone on the 25th floor, the weight of the moment crushed him. The responsibility, the disappointment, the feeling of having let down teammates, club, and fans became unbearable.

Terry recalled how he had thoughts about ending it all.

“After the match, we all went back to the hotel and I was on the 25th floor. I looked out the window and thought, ‘Why? Why did this happen?’ I’m not saying that if someone was in that position they would definitely jump, but those kinds of thoughts did cross my mind at certain moments. Then my teammates came to my room and took me downstairs,” he said.

Years have passed, trophies have been won, and legacies have been cemented, yet the scar remains.

“Sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night and think, ‘Oh, that really happened, didn’t it.’ I don’t think it will ever truly go away,” he added.
