In one of the Bundesliga’s most bizarre moments, Stuttgart striker Giovane Elber tried to stop himself from getting into more trouble by tapping his own mouth shut, but ended up being sent off anyway.

The incident occurred during a fiery clash between VfB Stuttgart and 1860 Munich in March 1997.

Elber, known for his sharp instincts in front of goal and equally sharp tongue, was shown a yellow card in the 26th minute after angrily swearing at the referee.

At half-time, the Brazilian forward took an unusual step to avoid a second booking, he wrapped red tape around his mouth and came out for the second half visibly silenced, determined not to let his words land him in more trouble.

But in the 78th minute, Elber’s efforts at self-control unraveled in a different way.

He caught an 1860 Munich player with a flying elbow, and the referee didn’t hesitate. Out came the second yellow, followed by a red. Mouth shut or not, Elber was off.

The incident became legendary just for its comic value.

Elber, who was in fine form that season, scoring 17 Bundesliga goals, later went on to play for Bayern Munich and win multiple league titles.
