A suspected case of food poisoning has left a family in Kwahu Atibie, Eastern Region, devastated, claiming the lives of a popular food vendor and her two-year-old son, while two other relatives remain in critical condition, according to a myjoyonline.com report.

The deceased woman, identified only as Taanii, was known in Mpraeso for selling fufu.

According to reports, she and her family were found unresponsive in their home on Sunday morning, August 31, 2025, prompting an immediate police investigation.

The family’s landlord, Osarfo Wiafe Emmanuel, was the first to raise the alarm after noticing that none of the family members had woken up as usual.

7 cases of food poisoning that have been reported since 2019

“A day before the incident, the family went to sell their food and came back peacefully. We don’t know what happened during the night. In the morning, they couldn’t wake up,” Wiafe told Adom News correspondent Akwasi Dwamena.

The bodies of the mother and her young son have been deposited at the Kwahu Government Hospital morgue in Atibie, where an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death.

Meanwhile, the surviving family members are receiving intensive treatment at the same facility.

Police have launched an investigation to determine whether food contamination, environmental factors or other foul play caused the deaths.

The tragedy has sparked heightened concerns over food safety, particularly as the deceased woman was a food vendor serving the Mpraeso community.

Health officials are urging the public to be extra vigilant about food hygiene and to seek medical care promptly if they experience symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness.
