For the rest of his life, Numo Akwaa Mensah III, who is the Highest Priest of the Ga Land is forbidden to eat common salt, not for health reasons, but as a binding spiritual obligation.
It is one of many mysterious taboos he must follow, most of which are never disclosed to anyone, not even to family.
“There are things only the gods and the one who enstooled me know. Some secrets are too sacred to speak of,” he told Adubia TV.
The Highest Chief Priest of the Ga Land indicated that these people, items and acts are forbidden from his palace, and no widow can enter the palace without purification rites.
Also, anyone returning from a funeral or assisting at a morgue is strictly barred, just as menstruating women are not permitted entry.
He also explained that food prepared with salt is forbidden and visitors in black attire are turned away at the gate to his palace.
But behind the calm persona of this Ga spiritual leader lies a man who has lived in solemn separation from ordinary life for over a decade. Yet, Numo insists it is a calling he has fully embraced.
