Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is set for a significant transformation as the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) rolls out a series of flagship projects aimed at easing congestion, improving passenger experience, and positioning the airport as West Africa’s leading aviation hub.

The developments come at a time when KIA, currently served by 24 international airlines, continues to record steady growth in passenger traffic and aircraft movements.

    Repurposing of Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is undergoing redevelopment to serve both international and domestic passengers.

The project will ease pressure on Terminal 3 during peak hours while maximising available space. The redesigned facility will feature a modernised meters-and-greeters area, a two-storey structure, and new retail and dining outlets.

Multi-storey car park with 24-Hour Economy facilities

In line with the government’s 24-hour economy policy, a new multi-storey car park will be constructed at the current Terminal 3 car park site.

With capacity increasing from 513 to 2,000 vehicles, the facility will incorporate retail, commercial, and hotel spaces.

GACL says the project will not only improve traffic flow and expand capacity but also create round-the-clock jobs across construction, operations, and hospitality.

Concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3

A new connecting concourse will link Terminals 2 and 3 to provide seamless movement for passengers. Currently, travelers moving between the two terminals must walk outdoors or use shuttle vehicles.

The concourse, designed to meet international standards, will house commercial spaces, lounges, restaurants, boarding bridges, and automated passenger conveniences such as lifts, escalators, and travellators.

    Runway overlay project

Rehabilitation work has also commenced on KIA’s main runway. The project includes widening the runway from 45 meters to 60 meters and installing modern LED aeronautical lighting to enhance safety, extend service life, and ensure compliance with global standards.

According to GACL, the combined effect of these strategic projects over the next two to five years will be iconic infrastructure, smoother passenger facilitation, and a more enjoyable travel experience.
