Lumba’s family head says the media crowd stopped some mourners from donating Lumba’s family head says the media crowd stopped some mourners from donating

The head of the late Daddy Lumba’s family, Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, has revealed that although the one-week observation for the Highlife legend was successful, the large number of media personnel at the event unintentionally prevented some mourners from making their donations.

According to him, while the family appreciates the extensive media coverage, the overwhelming presence of journalists and cameras made it difficult for some attendees to access the donation area during the ceremony.

He clarified that, contrary to circulating rumours, the family did not incur any debt following the event.

On the contrary, they made a profit from the ceremony through generous donations and support from dignitaries and fans of the late musician.

“There is no truth to that rumour. The programme went beautifully, and we did not incur any debt. We received so much help from everyone. I must commend the press as well for coming in numbers to cover it well. Although the sheer number of pressmen even stopped some people from coming to donate, we still managed to receive so many donations and make a handsome return,” he said in an interview with Gossips24tv.

The one-week observance was held on August 30, 2025, at the Black Star Square, following Daddy Lumba’s passing on July 26 at the Bank Hospital.

The event drew hundreds of people, including top political figures such as former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Several musicians including Sarkodie, Kwabena Kwabena, Amakye Dede, Kojo Antwi, and Pat Thomas, were also present to honour the Highlife legend.

Some notable donations at the one-week ceremony included GH₵100,000 from former President Akufo-Addo, GH₵50,000 from Dr Bawumia, GH₵10,000 from Kennedy Agyapong, GH₵5,000 from former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, GH₵5,000 from Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, and GH₵30,000 from the Ghana Police Service.
