Losing a parent is a wound that time rarely closes, and for Ghanaian highlife musician Akwaboah Jnr, the absence of his father, the late Akwaboah Snr, still casts a shadow over both his life and career.

In a recent interview on Joy Prime TV, Akwaboah spoke openly about how deeply his father’s death continues to affect him, describing his dad as more than a parent.

“My father was more than just a dad, he was my mentor and editor. He corrected my lyrics, rhythms, choruses, beats, everything, before I released any song. Now I have to do it all by myself,” he revealed.

The singer admitted that every new project reminds him of what he has lost.

“It’s a big blow I haven’t been able to get over. I miss him every time I’m about to release a new song. Even with this one, ‘Obinim’, he would have listened to the chorus, properly corrected the beats, and made changes where he saw fit,” he added.

Yet, out of grief has come a hard-earned resilience. While the pain remains, Akwaboah said it has forced him to lean more on himself.

“As much as it hurts, it has toughened me. I’ve come to realize that I now have to rely on myself.”
