Ateaa Tina, a longtime backup vocalist for the late legendary Highlife musician Daddy Lumba, has shared a deeply emotional memory of the singer.
Speaking on Hitz FM on July 28, 2025, Tina recalled that Daddy Lumba once confided in her that his mother died at the age of 52, and he believed he would only live a few years longer than she did.
According to her, that heartbreaking statement came rushing back to her upon hearing the news of his passing.
“When I heard of his death, I immediately remembered something he once told me that really broke me. When his mother died, he buried her in the same room he had given my friends and me to stay in,” she recounted.
“He came into the room very drunk, crying like a child. I asked why he was crying, and he said he had something to tell me and that I should remember it when he died,” she added.
Tina revealed that she told Daddy Lumba his statement was too heavy for her to process, but he insisted she was old enough to handle it.
“He told me his mother died at 52 and that he wouldn’t live much longer either, only a few years more. I told him it was too much for me to bear, but he said, ‘You’re not a child.’ So when I was informed of his death, those words came flooding back. It was so hard for me,” Tina shared.
Daddy Lumba, known for timeless classics such as Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, Theresa, Anidaso, and Ohia Asomdwe, will remain a towering figure in Ghana’s music scene even in death.
He died at the age of 60 on July 26, 2025.
