Gyakie, daughter of Highlife musician Nana Acheampong, says her father has been deeply shaken by the death of his longtime friend and collaborator, Daddy Lumba.

Acheampong and Lumba’s bond traces back to the late 1980s in Germany, where they teamed up to create the legendary Lumba Brothers. Their debut project, Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu, was released in 1989 and cemented their names in Highlife history.

Speaking to Andy Dosty, Gyakie revealed that the news has been heavy on her father, who is still struggling to process the loss. She explained that the family has been rallying around him during this difficult time.

“Yes, we’ve been in conversations before, during, and after it happened. I went for the one week; he’s not in the country at the moment, so it was only right that even if he wouldn’t be there, I represent, so I ended up going.

“It really did take a toll on him; it took a huge… He’s still trying to process the whole thing. Because this is somebody that’s been from the beginning of their career and all that, so it’s really been heavy for him, but the family has been there and we’ve been supportive with him,” Gyakie stated.

Although Acheampong could not attend the one-week observation held on August 30 at Independence Square, Gyakie said she represented him, ensuring his presence was felt despite his absence.
