Guru (middle) currently serves as SRC President for the University of Ghana

Popular Ghanaian rapper and student leader Maradona Adjei Yeboah, widely known as Guru, has officially been sworn in as a member of the University of Ghana (UG) Governing Council.

The ceremony, held at the university’s premises on April 25, 2025, also marked the inauguration of the newly reconstituted council by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

Guru, who currently serves as President of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC), now adds another significant role to his portfolio.

Known for hit songs like “Lapaz Toyota” and “Akwaaba,” Guru has successfully balanced his music career with active student leadership, advocating for improved welfare and academic policies.

During the swearing-in, Haruna Iddrisu urged council members to work diligently to enhance UG’s reputation as a world-class institution.

“UG holds a critical place in Ghana’s development journey and must continue to lead in academic excellence, innovation, and institutional integrity,” the Minister stated.

The newly appointed Council Chairperson, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, emphasised her commitment to upholding UG’s legacy of excellence.

The reconstituted 19-member council includes prominent figures such as Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo (Vice-Chancellor, UG), Dr. Alhassan Andani (former MD, Stanbic Bank), and George Agyekum Donkor (Chairman, ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID)).

With the new council in place, key focus areas are expected to include strengthening research and postgraduate programs, expanding digital learning infrastructure, enhancing student support services, and fostering industry-academia partnerships.
