Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has announced that the government’s clampdown on organised street begging in Accra is the first phase of a broader national campaign aimed at restoring public order and enhancing national security.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, the Minister disclosed that a recent operation led by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) resulted in the arrest of 2,241 foreign nationals in the Greater Accra Region. The operation, conducted in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, targeted known hotspots where street begging has been rampant.

Of those arrested, 909 were adults and 1,332 were children, comprising 961 males and 1,280 females. The Minister described the exercise as intelligence-led and part of a coordinated strategy to curb what he termed “organised street begging.”

“I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security,” Muntaka said, adding that the operation will be extended to other regions including Kumasi, Tamale, and other urban centres in the coming weeks.

The Minister called for public cooperation and understanding as the initiative expands beyond Accra. “I count on your continued cooperation and support when the operations reach your communities,” he urged.

The crackdown is expected to continue in phases and is part of the government’s wider effort to promote safety, reduce urban congestion, and prevent child exploitation through street begging.
