Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that his outfit will establish a committee to investigate the sudden demise of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

According to him, he has received conflicting reports on the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s collapse during the bout, amid concerns about his weight prior to the fight.

Adams stated that since the Nigeria Boxing Board Control (NBBC) and the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) have provided contradictory accounts of the incident, it would be prudent for the government to conduct an independent investigation to ensure justice.

In an interview with Sporty FM, the Member of Parliament for Buem constituency assured the public of transparent investigations, promising that those found culpable would be held accountable.

“Who is speaking the truth at this moment? As the sector minister, I don’t know. It is only through an investigation that we will determine whether all necessary protocols were followed for the fight to be sanctioned and whether all ringside protocols, including the availability of paramedics, were in place.

“We will need to establish a committee to investigate what happened. I have assured everyone that nothing will be covered up. We will answer all necessary questions and speak to both the Nigerian and Ghanaian sides, hoping they will cooperate with the investigative team,” he said.

Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a fight against Ghana’s John Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena and was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
