The government has recovered GH¢107 million in loan repayments for the Ghana Export-Import (GEXIM) Bank.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.

She explained that despite the recovery, some loan disbursements have been referred to security agencies due to concerns about how they were issued.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 21, the minister said the referrals form part of efforts to strengthen oversight, improve credit quality, and recover defaulted loans.

She noted that the bank disbursed a total of GH¢304 million in 2025 under a stringent credit creation policy designed to ensure that loans support economic growth and are repaid.

She added that the bank also intensified recovery efforts, retrieving GH¢107 million from loans that had previously not been serviced.

“You must satisfy the requirement; you must show that the credit you are taking will benefit the economy. You must demonstrate the ability to repay the loan because this is not free money. They also worked on repayment and recovered GH¢107 million from loans that had been granted but not paid,” she said.

The minister further revealed that some loan disbursements remain unexplained, prompting referrals to security agencies for investigation.
