Calls have been made for mining in forest reserves to be banned Calls have been made for mining in forest reserves to be banned

The Founder and Executive Director of education think tank, Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has called on the government to take immediate action against illegal mining.

He called on the government to ban mining in unauthorised areas, especially in forests and water bodies.

The issue of illegal mining has become one of great concern in recent times as people continue to mine in forests and water bodies, causing grave damages to the livelihoods of those who live in those communities.

Kofi Asare said the government must amend LI 2462 to regulate mining in forests.

In a post on his X platform, he wrote: “GoG has not demonstrated the capacity to effectively regulate anything, including mining in forests. The government must SIMPLY BAN mining in forests and stop pretending they can amend LI 2462 and regulate forest mining. Leave our forests alone!”

In recent times, calls for immediate action on galamsey have intensified after the assumption of office by Ghana’s current president. John Dramani Mahama.

Some people have called for the government to take drastic action against illegal miners.
