Ghanaian gospel singer Broda Sammy has called for a shift in the way gospel music is created. He urged artistes to focus on joy rather than sorrow.

During an interview with Okay FM on November 10, 2025, he criticized the current trend of gospel songs designed to make listeners cry.

“Gospel music is composed in such a way that it makes people cry. Go to the comments section of most gospel songs, and the people say that they were crying. But why must it be like that?” he questioned.

Broda Sammy compared gospel events with secular entertainment, noting that concerts like Rapperholic or ShattaFest are crafted to excite and energize audiences.

“But the way we have chosen to showcase Christianity is as something that we have to be somber all the time. No, we have to be happy as well.

“When people buy tickets to attend Rapperholic or ShattaFest, they are not buying to go and cry. They are going to go and be happy,” he explained.

He added that the Bible encourages joy, insisting that gospel music should follow the same principle. “Even the Bible says to always rejoice. So gospel music should be about rejoicing, not always about crying,” Broda Sammy said.
