Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician Amy Newman has expressed concern over the growing ‘industrialisation’ of gospel music, emphasising that it should remain a ministry rather than merely a business.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, she lamented the increasing focus on attention-seeking and entertainment-driven performances within the gospel space.

“These days, they call it an ‘industry,’ which means business. But for me, it’s a ‘ministry’, that’s where God has placed me. Some people now hype themselves and seek attention instead of focusing on the message and the calling,” she stated.

While acknowledging that the new generation of gospel artistes brings renewed energy and formal musical training, Amy Newman insisted that the foundation of gospel music must remain rooted in spirituality.

“What makes me happy is that many young artistes are now learning music formally. But this generation is combining musical knowledge with ministry, and that’s beautiful,” she said.

However, she raised concerns about the increasing similarity between gospel and secular music.

“We are different in our callings. Our work is God’s business. Many artistes are following the crowd, trying to please people instead of God. That’s why the music is becoming more about entertaining rather than blessing the nation and the world,” she cautioned.
