Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called for unity and reflection as the nation grieves the loss of eight lives in the August 6 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

After signing the Book of Condolence at the Ministry of Environment’s regional conference room, Gomashie urged citizens to set aside political divisions in the face of tragedy and focus on the values that bind the country together.

“This country needs to heal. We must reflect on our actions, whether they are helping or harming our nation. We cannot continue to politicise tragedies. We need to bow our heads in shame and learn from the lives and sacrifices of these gallant men. Let us be the Ghanaians the world knows us to be — empathetic and united,” she said.

Paying tribute to the late Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Gomashie praised their unwavering patriotism, integrity, and service, calling them shining examples of leadership worth emulating.

She grew emotional as she recounted her last conversation with Dr Murtala, just one day before the fatal crash.

“I will shock you. I am going to the Ashanti Region, when I return, you’ll see the things I’ve done for you,” he had told her.

That memory, she explained, was especially difficult to bear, as she was also preparing for her father’s funeral when news of the disaster reached her.
