Asante Kotoko fell to an opening day defeat to Gold Stars in the GHALCA Top Four

Asante Kotoko fell to a 2-1 defeat against Bibiani Gold Stars in their opening fixture of the 2025 GHALCA Top Four tournament at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The Porcupine Warriors made a bright start and took the lead in the 16th minute through Albert Amoah, who converted confidently to put Kotoko ahead.

Their advantage, however, lasted only six minutes as Gold Stars hit back. Samuel Atta Kumi stepped up from the spot to score a penalty in the 22nd minute, restoring parity.

Kotoko continued to push forward and created chances, with Albert Amoah going close again in a one-on-one situation and Saaka Dauda denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi.

Despite their dominance, it was the champions of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League who found the breakthrough after the break.

In the 63rd minute, Kotoko defender Henry Ansu was unfortunate to turn the ball into his own net, handing Gold Stars a 2-1 lead.

The Ghana Premier League record winners threw men forward in search of an equaliser, but their wastefulness in front of goal proved costly as the Miners held firm to claim all three points.
