The Upper East Region has made a significant breakthrough with the discovery of mineral resources, particularly gold, in seven out of its 15 municipal and district assemblies.
This revelation was made by the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, during an interaction with journalists at the proposed Bolgatanga Airport site on Friday, March 28.
According to the minister, the discovery presents a major economic opportunity for the region, with mining activities expected to attract investors and create business prospects. He emphasized the need for a functional airport in Bolgatanga, which will facilitate the transportation of gold and other minerals to different parts of the country more efficiently.
“This region, all of a sudden, we have discovered minerals around. Out of the 15 municipal and district assemblies, we have about seven of them that have this deposit. And if they are having this deposit, it means that there’s business to do,” he said.
He further highlighted that having a fully operational airport will help address challenges such as armed robbery attacks on miners and gold traders transporting their minerals by road.
“The miners will need faster means to send their gold to the national level without being disturbed by armed robberies,” he added.
The minister urged stakeholders to support the establishment of the Bolgatanga Airport, stressing that it would not only boost the mining industry but also position the Upper East Region as a key economic hub, given its proximity to Burkina Faso and Togo.
The Upper East Regional Coordinating Council shared this development on its official Facebook page, calling for collaboration to advance the region’s growth.
