Member of Parliament-elect for Ayawaso West Wuogon John Dumelo

John Dumelo, the Member of Parliament-elect for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has reflected on the harsh social media criticism he faced after his loss in the 2020 general election.

In a post shared on X on December 11, 2024, Dumelo acknowledged that had he not won in the just-ended 2024 elections, he would likely be facing another wave of online trolling.

“By now, boys would be trolling me on Twitter that I’ve lost again… God is good paa oooo,” he wrote.

The MP-elect also credited the social media backlash for motivating him to work harder towards his goals.

“‘John can never win Ayawaso,’ ‘Ayawaso is NPP’s stronghold,’ ‘Go to Volta and contest,’ and ‘Mr. Bottom-up approach.’ These statements pushed me to work smarter and win the seat. Handling trolling well can lead to success,” he added.

Background

The actor cum politician contested the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat on the ticket of the NDC and secured a landslide victory over incumbent Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

Dumelo’s victory marks a significant political shift in the constituency, which has long been considered a stronghold of the NPP.

His win unseated Lydia Seyram Alhassan, paving the way for him to represent the constituency in the 9th Parliament.

This is Dumelo’s second attempt at the seat after his defeat by Alhassan in the 2020 elections.

In the final results of the 2024 elections, Dumelo garnered 47,560 votes, while Lydia Alhassan received 39,214 votes.
