Renowned highlife musician Rex Omar has debunked claims that the Ghana Music Xperience (GMX) streaming platform launched in October 2024 by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is for a private entity.

In a discussion on UTV’s United Showbiz on November 16, 2024, Rex Omar noted that he was informed by the CEO of the Ghana Music Right Organization (GHAMRO) after attending the launch of the event.

“The truth is the streaming app launched recently by the NPP government is not for the NPP government. The app is for a private individual. Dr. Bawumia was only invited to the event.

“So the impression created by some people that it’s the NPP who created the app is a lie. The CEO of GHAMRO went to the ceremony, and he came to tell the rest of the executives that it’s indeed for a private person because the person who owns the streaming app works with GHAMRO,” he said.

Rex Omar added that the initiative is, however, not a bad decision since it would help the Ghana music industry positively.

“The streaming app is like when there wasn’t digitization those days; we were using record shops. And they worked perfectly. So as many apps would be implemented to help the Ghana music industry, there is no problem with it. But I have not heard it in any part of the world that a government has implemented a streaming app for creatives,” he added.

    About the GMX streaming app

The Ghana Music Xperience (GMX) streaming platform was launched in October 2024 by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in Accra.

The platform is said to be dedicated exclusively to Ghanaian music, offering a wide range of genres, from highlife and hiplife to afrobeat and traditional rhythms.

The app aims at creating a digital space for local artistes to showcase their music while providing a platform for Ghanaians to access and enjoy homegrown

    content.
