Gloria Sarfo claims Ghanaian movies helped elevate Nigerian actors Gloria Sarfo claims Ghanaian movies helped elevate Nigerian actors

Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has pushed back against claims that Nigerian movies were responsible for the rise in popularity of Ghanaian actors and actresses.

DStv Saga: ‘Removing Akwaaba Magic could hurt Ghana’s film industry’ – Gloria Sarfo

According to her, such a narrative is not only misleading but also undermines the impact of Ghana’s own film industry.

Speaking during a GhanaWeb X Space session held on Friday, September 12, 2025, Sarfo asserted that, historically, it was Ghanaian movies that helped elevate Nigerian actors, not the other way around.

“I don’t think it’s the Nigerian movies that have made Ghanaian actors popular. First of all, I can categorically say that it is Ghanaian movies that have made Nigerian actors popular because just a few years ago, until a Nigerian actor was seen as one who had arrived or as an A-list actor, it was only after they came to Ghana to film that they earned that title,” she explained.

While acknowledging that Nigerian films have contributed to the visibility of Ghanaian talent, Sarfo stressed that they cannot be credited as the sole reason for Ghanaian actors’ success.

“Just a few years ago, we made them popular, and I don’t know what popularity they gave Ghanaians. They didn’t make us popular, but they actually contributed to the level of popularity that we have,” she added.
