Ghanaian stand-up comedian and skit-maker, Comedian Waris (Abdul Waris Umaru), has criticised Ghana’s tendency to stifle emerging talents.
Speaking during a GhanaWeb X Spaces conversation, he praised Nigerians for nurturing and sustaining their talents, in contrast to what he described as Ghana’s pervasive “pull-him-down” mentality.
“I’m hoping that people will allow others to grow when they are coming up. Whatever the person is bringing, just watch and support them. That is one thing Nigerians are good at, they know how to raise their talents and sustain them.
“But in Ghana, the moment someone starts, we shoot them down with this pull-him-down attitude,” he said.
He emphasised that instead of tearing down new creators, Ghanaians should observe and support them to flourish.

Waris expressed hope that the country’s future approach would grant creators the space to explore and evolve their art, a shift he sees as essential for the growth of Ghana’s creative industry.
“We are not giving them the space. So I’m praying that in the future, we allow creators to explore so they can grow,” he added.
