Deputy Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has rebuked the UK Bar Council and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association over what he describes as “colonialist-induced insults” following their call for President John Dramani Mahama to reinstate suspended Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.

In a statement addressed to the two legal associations, Dr Apaak described their demand as “impudent” and “baseless,” stressing that Ghana is a sovereign nation governed by its constitution, not foreign institutions.

“Ghanaians will not tolerate such nonsensical colonialist-induced insults, disguised as demands, from you. Never! You cannot order our President to ‘immediately and without delay reinstate the Chief Justice of Ghana. Such impudence!” he wrote.

According to him, President Mahama’s actions regarding the matter have been lawful and consistent with constitutional provisions, dismissing any suggestion of wrongdoing.

Dr Apaak maintained that Ghana is not a “lawless banana republic,” emphasising that the President is answerable only to the people of Ghana and the nation’s constitution.

He further accused the associations of being misled by “collaborators” into issuing a statement that could tarnish their credibility.

“Your collaborators have deceived you into damaging your reputation with these baseless demands. Withdraw your unjustified statement and apologise to Ghanaians,” the statement added.
