RJZ, a member of the La Même Gang, has spoken about the challenges he has been facing in the Ghanaian music industry.

According to musician, the Ghanaian audience gravitates toward what he calls “mediocre” or purely danceable songs, which makes it difficult for artistes like him, who pride themselves on lyricism, to thrive.

‘The wildest rumour we heard about us is that we are gay’ – La Meme Gang

In a post on X, the artiste explained that his strength lies in writing and delivering meaningful lyrics, but this clashes with the kind of music listeners in Ghana tend to support.

“Lyricism is my stronghold. That’s where I excel. The most difficult stage in my career is when I had to come to terms with the fact that Ghanaians will always resonate with mediocre music/danceable music. Had to accept the fact that I had to dumb it down to be seen in this country.

“I am an artiste with a lot of substance so believe me when I tell you it’s very hard to make it here. You have to be easy & mediocre with your lyrics & sound,” RJZ wrote.

He admitted that adjusting his style to fit the mainstream has not been easy, especially since he values substance in his music.

He indicated that while other artistes may excel at producing the type of songs the public demands, RJZ said he finds it impossible to follow that path.

“It is very difficult to make sh*t music. Most people do that exceptionally well. I can’t,” he added.
