Ghanaians have expressed mixed feelings on social media and in public conversations following the selection of Maame Efua Houadjeto as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA). President John Mahama’s appointment has aroused both praise and suspicion, with many evaluating her political background and tourist skills.

Maame Efua, a former Deputy Women’s Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ran as the party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Mfantsiman Constituency in the 2024 elections. She succeeds Akwasi Agyeman, who stepped down after running the agency for several years.

The Ghana Tourism Authority is an important agency within the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts. Its mission is to establish Ghana as a premier, sustainable tourist destination by regulating the tourism industry, encouraging investment, and forging public-private partnerships.

While some welcome Maame Efua’s appointment, citing her leadership and political background, others question her tourist competence. Her supporters hope that her political experience will help her negotiate government policies and seek investment to strengthen the sector.

However, some contend that the position should have been filled by someone with more tourism industry experience. They regard the appointment as political rather than merit-based, with one saying, “Ghana’s tourism needs experts, not party loyalists.”

Despite these opposing viewpoints, the Ghana Tourism Authority remains committed to its aim of developing sustainable tourism.

Some remarks from netizens regarding her appointment

The agency’s goals are to improve service quality, strengthen relationships, and showcase Ghana’s rich cultural legacy globally. As Maame Efua begins her tenure, all eyes are on her capacity to effect positive change and boost Ghana’s tourist industry.
