Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah

Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah has expressed concerns about the habit of his colleagues focusing too much on Nigeria when they could explore other jurisdictions.

In an interview on Joy Prime, OB Amponsah emphasised that Nigeria should not be seen as the only competitor for Ghanaian comedians.

“I feel like our focus is too much on Nigeria. I’ve performed in Rwanda, Zambia, and South Africa. Joo and Ebenezer Dwomoh went to Kenya for shows, and Jacinta performed at the Apollo. So, Nigerians are not our competition,” he said.

He pointed out that Ghanaian comedians have successfully ingrained stand-up comedy into the local culture, allowing them to outshine Nigerian comedians globally.

“Comedians from Ghana have built relationships with international comedians, which has helped them gain better access to the global market.

“The African entertainment space is vast. When you travel outside Ghana, you realise how much we all share as Africans. So, I think we should move beyond the Nigerian-centric mindset. Even between us and Nigeria, there’s Togo,” he stated.

OB Amponsah concluded by saying, “Africa is huge, and there are many opportunities beyond Nigeria.”
