The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, has said Ghana was on a dangerous economic trajectory under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and risked becoming an international laughing stock if the party had remained in power.

Speaking on the occasion of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration’s one year in office, Rashid Computer argued that the outcome of the 2024 general election rescued the country from further economic deterioration, a report by citinewsroom.com on January 8, 2026, has said.

According to him, the Mahama administration inherited a severely distressed economy, characterised by Ghana’s exclusion from the international capital market and declining investor confidence.

He described the economic situation at the time as a ‘junk economy,’ noting that the country’s inability to access capital markets had undermined its credibility on the global stage.

“The country was going down the drain under the NPP government, and it would have become a laughingstock if we had not stopped the NPP in the last general election. The economy had been described as a junk economy, and Ghana could not access the capital market,” he stated.

Rashid Computer further attributed the early stability of the current administration to President Mahama’s experience, gained from his previous term in office and his eight years in opposition.

He explained that this experience enabled Mahama to learn from past mistakes, correct weaknesses in governance, and take swift action to stabilise state institutions.

“When Mahama assumed office, he benefited from hindsight, having previously governed the country and spent eight years in opposition, with a clear promise to put things right,” he indicated.

He also commended the government for what he described as a scandal-free first year in office, stressing that President Mahama’s firm stance on accountability has influenced the conduct of public officials.

“In one year, we have not witnessed any scandal, which is commendable. This is because, upon appointing us, he made it clear that public resources belong to the people of Ghana and not to appointees or their families,” he added.

Rashid Computer said Mahama’s emphasis on accountability and responsible stewardship of public resources has helped restore confidence in governance and set a positive tone for the administration’s future performance.
