The 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Swimming Championships splashed off in grand style on Friday, October 3, at the Borteyman Sports Complex, as Ghana welcomed some of the continent’s finest swimmers for the three-day competition.

The event, hosted by the Ghana Swimming Association, has drawn participants from 16 countries across the Zone 2 region, including Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, and host nation Ghana.

In her opening address, Delphina Quaye, president of the Ghana Swimming Association, described the occasion as a proud moment for Ghanaian sport.

“Hosting this event is an honour for our country, as have been the other major events we hosted in the last four years. It is a testament to Ghana’s growing influence in international aquatic sports and to our deep commitment to nurturing talent, fostering unity, and promoting excellence across Africa,” she said.

Dr. Mohamed Diop, president of Africa Aquatics, also celebrated a milestone moment for the region, highlighting the achievements of young Nigerian swimmer Abdul Jabar Adama.

“This edition is marked by a historic milestone for Zone 2: for the very first time, a swimmer from our region has won a medal at the World Junior Swimming Championships. That swimmer is the brilliant Nigerian talent Abdul Jabar Adama, who claimed silver in the 50m butterfly in Bucharest. His meteoric rise embodies the bright future of our region and highlights the immense potential we are called to nurture,” he said.

Day one of the championships featured an intense lineup of races, including the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 400m individual medley, 200m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, and the relay events.

Ghana’s swimmers made a promising start to the competition. National star Abeiku Jackson won the men’s 100m freestyle, winning gold and thrilling the home fans.

Joselle Mensah secured bronze in the 400m individual medley, while Nubia Adjei and Harry Stacey also turned in strong performances in their respective events.

The biggest cheer of the day came in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, where Team Ghana won gold, capping a successful first day for the hosts.

Day two of the competition is currently underway at the Borteyman Sports Complex and will wrap up on Sunday, October 5, 2025, as Ghana looks to build on its impressive start and finish the championship on a high.
