The Deputy Director for Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Dr Robert Sogbadji, has revealed that Ghana aims to commence construction of its first nuclear power plant by 2027.

According to him, the government has secured two sites to host the projects as part of efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business on the sidelines of the 9th Ghana Energy Awards, Dr Sogbadji noted that preparatory work for the development of the facility is already underway, including the pursuit of a power purchase agreement.

“We have two sides which have been identified where we want to put our new nuclear power plant. One site will host the large power plant and the other site will host the small power plant in an industrial enclave,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the government has begun steps toward acquiring the land for the projects.

“Steps are ongoing to ensure that we acquire that land and roughly by 2027 we should be able to cut sod for construction. One situated in the Western Region and the other in the Central Region,” he added.

Dr Sogbadji also emphasized that the ministry is working within a six-month timeline to expand electricity access, remaining on course to achieve its target of 90% nationwide coverage.

“This year we laid the foundation, next year we are springing up because we are trying to reach a universal access to electricity, that is 90 percent and that is our target.”
