Ghana set to reopen diplomatic mission in Ireland after 17 years

Ghana is set to reopen its diplomatic mission in Ireland as part of efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries and improve support for Ghanaians living there.

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, who is also the Member of Parliament for Assin North, led a Ghanaian delegation to Dublin on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, ahead of the official reopening of the mission.

Ghana closed its diplomatic mission in Ireland in September 2009 due to budgetary constraints.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the reopening would mark a new chapter in Ghana-Ireland relations and provide an opportunity to deepen diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

According to the Ministry, the mission would also strengthen engagement with the Ghanaian community in Ireland while improving consular services and support for Ghanaians living in the country.

Mr Quayson received a warm welcome from members of the Ghanaian community in Dublin, who organised a cultural display and traditional drumming to mark his arrival.

The Ministry said the reception reflected the strong ties among Ghanaians living in Ireland and their continued connection with Ghana.

The reopening of the mission is expected to provide a permanent diplomatic presence for Ghana in Ireland and support closer relations between the two countries.
