The Ghana Boxing Federation hosted an international amateur boxing friendly against their Nigerian counterparts at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday as both countries intensified preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The event, staged at the stadium’s car park, reignited the long-standing sporting rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria, with the Black Bombers and Black Hitters taking on a strong Nigerian amateur boxing team in a series of competitive bouts.

Nigeria dominated the women’s division, recording victories in both contests as Kadijat Ajisola defeated Ramatu Quaye and Aishat Gbadamosi edged Nancy Bamfo.

However, Ghana responded strongly in the men’s category, winning four of the five bouts contested. Victories were recorded by Amadu Mohammed, Ebenezer Ankrah, Abdul Wahid Omar and Desmond Pappoe, while Nigeria’s Folly Hassan secured the only male win for the visitors after defeating Khalid Abdul.

The boxing showcase was organised by the GBF with support from the Ghana Olympic Committee and the National Sports Authority.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, GOC President Richard Akpokavie and GBF President Dauda Fuseni.

Fuseni described the tournament as important in strengthening relations between the two nations, while Ankrah praised the collaboration as beneficial for sports development in West Africa.
