President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the government will require $1.7 billion to complete nearly 90 unfinished hospitals under the Agenda 111 project started by the previous administration.

Speaking during a meeting with the Christian Council on Monday, February 24, 2025, the president encouraged religious bodies to collaborate with the government to complete the unfinished hospitals.

“So, there are many places where you have a mission hospital. We could have used that money to upgrade the facilities in the mission hospital. Government has gone to start a hospital but has not been able to finish it, and they are sitting there, some at foundation level, some at lintel level, and so many of them – almost 90 hospitals.

“We need $1.7 billion to be able to complete the hospitals. The one that they said they commissioned, there’s nothing in it, just one hospital. They finished the structure, but there’s not even a bed in the hospital,” he explained.

According to him, the issue had been discussed at the Cabinet level, with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, expected to present a formal proposal on the way forward.

“We discussed it a bit in Cabinet, but the Minister of Health is going to come with a paper to see what we do. If some of the missions are interested, we could get them to finish the hospital and manage the hospital and provide the service,” he indicated.

He further explained that a combination of government funding and mission hospital partnerships could be an effective way to complete the stalled projects.

“It will be a mix. We can also raise money and finish some, but the mission hospital still can take some and complete them and run the hospital,” he noted.

The project was launched by the former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.

It covers the design, procurement, construction, equipping and commissioning of 101 District Hospitals, 6 Regional Hospitals in newly created regions, as well as 1 Regional Hospital in the Western Region, 2 psychiatric hospitals in Kumasi and Tamale and a redeveloped Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

It is to ensure that Ghanaians nationwide have improved access to quality healthcare services.
