West Africa eyes $80 billion oil future as Ghana steps up exploration

The oil and gas industry across sub-Saharan Africa stands at a decisive turning point, according to a new Deloitte report on the West Africa Oil and Gas Outlook.

From Nigeria’s hydrocarbon-rich delta to Angola’s offshore blocks and the gas reserves in East Africa’s rift valley, the region is rethinking how to balance energy equity, security, and sustainability in an era of global transition.

Deloitte’s data highlights that the West African oil and gas market could grow at a compound annual rate of 6.5% between 2025 and 2033, representing a potential market worth of $80 billion.

“Nigeria and Ghana account for approximately 60% and 20% of that value, respectively,” it said.

The surge is expected to be driven by strong global energy demand and the region’s untapped reserves.

In crude oil production, Nigeria continues to dominate, producing an estimated 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) by the end of 2024, with Angola close behind at 1.1 million bpd.

These figures underscore West Africa’s critical role in Africa’s overall energy outlook.

The report points to policy uncertainty, infrastructure gaps, and environmental pressures that could challenge the region’s long-term competitiveness.

Governments are under growing pressure to reconcile fossil-fuel-driven growth with global climate goals and local demands for cleaner, more inclusive energy access.

Experts say that the coming decade will test whether West Africa can convert its hydrocarbon wealth into sustainable development or remain vulnerable to shifting global market dynamics.

“The next chapter for West Africa’s energy sector isn’t just about output, it’s about balance. Balancing growth with equity, production with sustainability, and local benefit with global relevance,” the Deloitte report noted.

As countries like Ghana, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire ramp up exploration, the region could emerge not just as a production hub but as a testing ground for Africa’s energy future.
