Berla Mundi started a social media topic recently by voicing her dissatisfaction with the country’s noise pollution.

In a now-viral article, she bemoaned the excessive noise made by trucks selling items in residential neighborhoods as early as 6 a.m.

The well-known Ghanaian media figure questioned why merchants, particularly those selling ‘nkura duro’ (a local herbal medicine), blast loud music and announcements in the early hours of the morning, disturbing the quiet of others still sleeping or preparing for work. She referred to this as “noise pollution” and called for immediate response to such disturbances in metropolitan areas.

Her comments have elicited conflicting reactions, with some admitting that noise pollution is a big problem in Ghana and others arguing that street sellers are simply trying to make a living. Some have encouraged Berla to relocate to a quieter neighbourhood if the noise pollution is constantly bothering her.

She wrote on x. “To be honest, Ghana is a sick country! Why is there a truck selling ‘nkura duro’ with loud music and announcements on the streets at 6 a.m., when people are sleeping or getting ready for work?”That is noise pollution…”

She has now received harsh criticism for seeking to disparage hardworking individuals striving to make ends meet.
