THE German Embassy in Accra hosted a Football Day and match viewing on Monday to celebrate the friendly international game between Germany and Ghana, strengthening the long-standing sporting and cultural ties between the two countries.

The event brought together players, football academies, and fans, highlighting the deep connections shaped by both diplomacy and people-to-people engagement.

Germany’s squad featured Jamie Leweling, who has Ghanaian family roots, while Ghana’s team included players such as Patric Pfeiffer, Derrick John, and Jonas Adjetey, who have benefited from “Fan Park,” offering training sessions and activities for young players, and culminated with a public viewing of the match in the evening.

Key figures in Ghanaian football relations included Anthony Baffoe, Samuel Kuffour, and Otto Addo, who played pivotal roles in fostering cooperation and professional development between the two football systems. Their contributions reflect continuity, professionalism, and mutual trust in the sport.

The programme also recognised individuals whose careers bridged both nations. Petra Landers, a former European champion and member of Germany’s first women’s national team, continues to promote equal opportunities in Ghana through her “Faces of Football” initiative. The Gerald-Asamoah Football Academy, founded by the Ghana-born German international, remains committed to youth development and nurturing football talent.

Participating institutions included BVB International Academy Ghana, Gerald-Asamoah Football Academy, Faces of Football, Football in Your Life, and the German International School Accra.

Beyond showcasing football talent, the event underscored principles that guided cooperation between Germany and Ghana, including fair play, respect, and recognition of performance. It was a celebration of sport, cultural exchange, and enduring friendship between the two nations.
