The Government of Ghana has pledged to cover the full travel expenses of Doris Adu Gyamfi, the mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, to enable her to attend her son’s funeral in New York following his tragic death.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the government’s decision on Saturday, October 31, 2026, following the teenager’s fatal shooting in the Bronx on Thursday, October 29.

According to the minister, he spoke with Madam Adu Gyamfi on Friday and subsequently directed officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist her with the visa application process.

He further assured the bereaved family that the Mahama administration would take responsibility for all the mother’s travel expenses and was also prepared to contribute towards organising a dignified funeral for the deceased teenager.

“The Mahama Administration will take care of the full cost of Madam Adu Gyamfi’s travels and also stands ready to contribute towards a dignifying funeral,” Ablakwa stated.

The government’s intervention is expected to help the grieving mother travel to the United States to personally bid farewell to her son.

The announcement by the Ghanaian government came after an intervention by New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, who reportedly contacted US President Donald Trump to seek assistance in securing a visa for the bereaved mother.

In a post on X, Mayor Mamdani disclosed that President Trump had agreed to grant Madam Adu Gyamfi a visa immediately following their telephone conversation.

He stressed that no parent should have to endure the pain of losing a child, particularly when separated from the deceased by thousands of miles.

“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away. Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person,” Mamdani wrote.

He added that he had spoken directly with President Trump, who agreed to facilitate the visa arrangements.
