Ghana has deployed a contingent of soldiers from the 48th Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces to assist Jamaica with reconstruction efforts, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa recently.

The troops were formally sent off at a parade addressed by President John Dramani Mahama on December 17, 2025, who described the mission as a humanitarian duty rooted in solidarity and the shared history between Ghana and the Caribbean.

“Today’s mission reinforces Ghana’s commitment to humanitarian response, disaster recovery, and South-South cooperation, Pan-African and Afro-Caribbean solidarity,” President Mahama stated.

He emphasised that the deployment is strictly humanitarian, focused on rebuilding, engineering works, and providing support for displaced communities.

Ghana has previously provided humanitarian aid to countries affected by crises, including Jamaica, Cuba, and Sudan, sending food, blankets, medicines, and other essentials.

Following discussions with Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Hornace, Ghana offered further practical support, including the deployment of engineering troops and tents for temporary shelter.

President Mahama commended the Ghana Armed Forces for their professionalism and urged the troops to uphold discipline, respect local authorities, and act as ambassadors of Ghana abroad.

He expressed confidence that their efforts would reinforce Ghana’s reputation in international humanitarian missions.

“Through you, Ghana conveys a clear message to the people and government of Jamaica that they are not alone and that Ghana stands in solidarity with them,” the president said.
